I am about to pull down my existing house in S.Devon but before I can do this I have to satisfy a condition in my planning permission with regard trees (which in any event I intend to keep). I need to show a plan (already prepared) allocating a reference number to each tree having a stem diameter of 75mm at 1.5m height above ground and give the crown spread. So far fairly straightforward. I also need to give details of vigour, condition and age. Is there a standard type of classification used for this purpose e.g. vigour on a scale 1-10 and also for condition? I have also been asked to provide a protective fence in accordance with BS5837 giving details of its construction. Any advice on this plus the recommended distance from my trees would be much appreciated.

They are basically asking for a BS5837 tree survey Steve. Something which should be carried out by an experienced arboriculturist who can competently assess a trees condition. The vigour stipulation suggests to me, that the document they sent to you, may be out of date as vigour was a requirement for the older BS5837 to enable calculation of the root protection area. Some LPA's still havent got all their paperwork updated even though its 3 years since the updated BS. The tree protection calculated position and specification should follow the guidance in BS5837:2005 and this again, is something you must entrust to an experienced arboriculturist.
